3 Tips for Party Catering Like a Pro

Tip #1: Plan Your Menu

"An hour of planning can save you 10 hours of doing." — Dale Carnegie.

Do you want to ensure you're not running around like a headless chook at your staff Christmas party? Make sure to properly plan your catering menu well in advance! Here are 3 things not to forget:

  1. How many guests are you expecting and are you wanting to fill their bellies full or just keep them from feeling hungry?
    This will dictate what type of catering menu you provide and how much of each item you need to order.
  2. Will there be children at the event who need kid-friendly options?
    Most of them probably won't be keen on the oysters at the seafood station. Low-mess finger food is always a good choice for kids and it reduces the need for cutlery and sometimes even plates.
  3. Do you need to cater for any dietary requirements?
    If you're not taking RSVPs where people can list their dietary requirements, make sure to have a few vegetarian and gluten free options. Salads with protein and dressing on the side are a great way to tick off two dietary requirements in one hit.

Tip #2: Lock-in Your Catering Early

Locking in your catering early can save you a lot of last minute stress, so get in early and save yourself a few grey hairs! Don't know your final numbers yet? Not a problem. It's quite common to need to adjust the size of your order up or down as event details become confirmed and you have a better idea of your guest numbers. Simply follow up with your catering company a few days before the event to confirm your order, arrival time and final numbers.

Tip #3: Don't Forget the Utensils

The all important utensils for serving your party catering can often be forgotten. Ensure you have a number of tongs on hand for breads and salads while large serving spoons will be need for most sides. To stop things getting messy, place a saucer next to each platter for the utensil to rest on. Knives will also be handy for cheeses platters and spoons for sauces. Be sure to check with your caterer to see what they can provide for you.
